The art director of documenta 14, Polish-born Adam Szymczyk (1970), is one of the most closely watched curators of today. The New York Times labelled him a “curator superstar” and according to the ArtReview magazine he is one of the five most influential figures in the world of art. In the 1990s he studied art history at Warsaw University, in 1997 he co-founded the Fundacja Galerii Foksal in Warsaw. He was the director of Kunsthalle Basel (2003–2014). In 2008 he was the co-curator of the Berlin Biennalle.
