Concert:
Chacon, Nono, Ligeti, Ablinger, Xenakis, Tenney, Komorous etc. 12th biennial contemporary music festival in the new PLATO headquarters.
The Long Night concert places considerable demands on listeners, greater demands on the organizers, and even greater ones on the performers, who have to remain alert long into the night and early morning. In return, the marathon offers a unique and intense musical experience that rips one out of the usual flow of time. This year, the evening will test out the acoustics of the new home of the PLATO gallery: the historical building of the city’s former slaughterhouse. The program will include a site-specific piece by Peter Ablinger, percussion improvisations by Lucas Ligeti and a piece by Ligeti performed by Quartetto Prometeo from Milan. This group will also present Luigi Nono’s seminal string quartet Fragmente – Stille, an Diotima. Members of Ostravská banda will perform the vast spaces of James Tenney’s playful compositions as well as a series of solo and chamber pieces by Raven Chacon.
One of the highlights of the program will be Bernhard Lang’s opera Playing Trump at the Antonín Dvořák Theatre – the libretto is based on quotes from the former American president. In this piece, the composer weaves together diverse genres of music (including pop, jazz, minimalism and electronic music) to create a dynamic – perhaps even a little crazy – musical mix. The end of the Long Night will belong to chamber pieces and virtuoso solo performances by musicians including Martin Petrák, William Lang, Gareth Davis, Daniel Haveland Ondrej Veselý.
