Acoustic model of the new concert hall in PLATO

What will the interior of the future Ostrava Concert hall, which has been named one of the world’s top 10 current architectural projects by U.S. magazine Architizer, look like?

The city of Ostrava is preparing a project to build a new Concert hall, designed by renowned architect Steven Holl and his team. In order for the hall to have excellent acoustic parameters, it was necessary to simulate real acoustic conditions. Therefore, a 1:10 scale model of the interior of the Concert hall was created in 2021, followed by a series of testing in 2022. The three-ton model will be placed in PLATO for several months.

Why did the acoustics of the future Ostrava concert hall have to be tested?

“Not everything can be simulated in computer. That is why we have a real model in which the sound is tested and analyzed. Small upholstered chairs and figures with hairs and suitcases are found inside the model. They represent the audience in the hall and simulate sound absorptance of the audience because the presence of people in the hall also changes the acoustic parameters of space. The model was filled with gaseous nitrogen by us because all frequencies inside the model must be ten times higher than normally due to the 1:10 scale. The nitrogen enabled us to maximize the authenticity of the simulated environment and obtain more accurate measurement values. The 1:10 scale is an ideal compromise between functionality and economic costs.”
