The art lost and created during the Russian war in Ukraine. Insights from the Ukrainian contemporary art scene. Manifests and love letters from hell.

The day before the full-scale invasion the war criminal president of Russia made a speech insisting Ukraine should not exist, just as Ukrainian identity. However, it’s not the first case Ukrainian culture got attacked. There are 134 cases of Ukrainian culture suppression known over the last 400 years. Constant confrontation with Imperialism pressure, eternal struggle for independence, and a desperate attempts to preserve the heritage made Ukrainian culture a tool of resistance, a way of protest, and a collective manifest of freedom. Apparently, one of the best things we can do now to contribute against Imperialism and against Russian colonial ambition is to support Ukrainian identity: with our word and attention.

Homeward

Having lost the elder son on the war, Mustafa has to transfer his dead body to the homeland – Crimea. During this long and challenging trip, Mustafa tries to solve the innumerable problems and to find a common language with his younger son. On the way back home, the youngster becomes a man,finds his inner core, and understands who he is. At the same time, the father learns to admit his mistakes and apologise for them. Having lost the one they both loved, the father and the son grow genuinely close to each other.

Residency of Dnipro Center for Contemporary Culture as well as a cultural programme with Ukrainian artists was supported by the Goethe-Institut as part of a comprehensive package of measures for which the Federal Foreign Office provides funding from the 2022 Supplementary Budget to mitigate the effects of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.

Darja Lukjanenko works interdisciplinary, across performance, text, and gardening. Her process is a based on empathy stimulation practices, non-human position study, and discovering domination-free forms of relationships. Since 2020 she has confronted rockets and protesting [Russian] cosmism. Since 2022 she has mapping Ukrainian culture decolonization processes and archived the Russian war in Ukraine mythology.

Напередодні повномасштабного вторгнення в Україну президент Росії та військовий злочинець зробив промову, в який заперечив існування української ідентичності та культури. Проте, це далеко не перший напад на українську культуру. Відомо понад 134 випадків пригнічення української культури, що відбулися протягом останніх 400 років. Постійне протистояння з імперіалізмом, боротьба за незалежність, та відчайдушні спроби зберегти спадщину зробили українську культуру інструментом опору, способом протесту, колективним маніфестом свободи. Вочевидь, підтримка української культури зараз – це один із найкращих шляхів зробити внесок проти імперіалізму та колоніальних амбіцій Росії.

Втративши старшого сина на війні, Мустафа збирається відвести його тіло на батьківщину – в Крим. Протягом цієї довгої і складної подорожі, Мустафа намагається вирішити незліченні проблеми і порозумітися зі своїм молодшим сином. Дорогою додому молодший син дорослішає, знаходить своє внутрішнє ядро, і розуміє, ким він є. В той самий час, батько вчиться визнавати свої помилки і вибачатися. Втративши того, кого вони обидва любили, батько і син зростають у щирий близості. (European Film Awards)
