Between 2018 and 2024, PLATO operated in the former Bauhaus home improvement store in the center of Ostrava, where it had nearly 5000 m² at its disposal for exhibitions, programs, and educational activities. This was a temporary location until the surrounding historical slaughterhouse from the late 19th century was renovated, which became its permanent residence in the fall of 2022. From the same year, 2022, when we moved our main activities to the new headquarters in the historical slaughterhouse, the space was primarily used by other institutions, schools, platforms, communities, and individuals until the end of June 2024. More than 200 artists, over 60 institutions, platforms, and communities, hundreds of schools, and thousands of visitors passed through the space. The owner of the building, the City of Ostrava, has long-term plans for new construction here.
Opening and closing: 11/4/2018–30/6/2024
Concept of the space and its usage: Marek Pokorný, Linda and Daniela Dostálkovy, Michal Novotný, Jakub Adamec, and Edith Jeřábková
Visual identity: Tomáš Celizna and Radim Peško
Exhibition space: 5,400 m²
Total usable area: 6,160 m²

In the generous open space of the hall, there was a library with a reading room, a bistro with an adjoining covered garden, and a cinema that served as a relaxation zone during the day. We also built a large stage for concerts or theater performances and a bookstore. These parts of the gallery, including the infopoint, facilities for educational programs, and cloakroom, were built by PLATO over the course of a year in collaboration with artists from around the world. Thus, we offered functional zones and artworks in one space. Elements referencing the former function of the building, such as signs or wall paintings, were intentionally left in the interior of PLATO.

Along with PLATO’s relocation to the former Bauhaus home improvement store, a new visual identity and website have been created. The authors are graphic designers Radim Peško and Tomáš Celizna. The identity draws on remnants of the formal language of the space, transforming them into a new narrative while simultaneously referencing the temporary nature of PLATO’s presence in the Bauhaus premises.

For one year, we gradually opened functional zones that we built as site-specific artworks within the Temporary Structures cycle. This was followed by three exhibition cycles: re:bauhaus (2019) commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus art school, Intensities (2020), where we explored various intensities shaping the contemporary world, and Oh and Hah, Beauty, Ruin and Slack (2021–2022), in which we named societal transformations using images and the concept of ruins (PLATO incorporated ruins – the remains of a former DIY store, the reconstructed ruins of former slaughterhouses, Ostrava as a ruin of the industrial era). International exhibition projects naturally included artists working in the region. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we also utilized interpreters for exhibitions. In 2020 and 2023, alongside Prague and Brno, we became co-organizers of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award exhibition.

We are interested in contemporary (visual) art in the context of other artistic disciplines and academic fields. At PLATO Bauhaus, we had two music series: one focused on contemporary experimental electronic music in collaboration with the Gin&Platonic platform, and another oriented towards contemporary artificial music curated by Daniel Brożek. We offered regular cinema screenings, lectures, debates, and meet-ups for parents with children, mineralogists, or people experiencing grief. Our most intensive efforts were dedicated to educational programmes for all school levels, from toddlers to teenagers. We regularly hosted the Summer Academy of Contemporary Art for educators. We experienced events such as the School of Thinking, School of Forgetting, School of Expressions, and the symposium Critical Styling.
Since 2022, when we relocated our main activities to a new venue in the historical slaughterhouses, the space has been used by other institutions, platforms, communities, and individuals. They have organized debates, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, festivals, concerts, or simply gathered in a safe space. Wedding has also been held here.
